CalvertHealth to host the 15th Annual Breast Cancer 5K on October 19 in Solomons

08/09/2024
CalvertHealth will hold its 15th Annual Breast Cancer 5K on Saturday, October 19 in beautiful Solomons Island. New this year, there will be a fun one-and-a-half-mile walk, which will follow along scenic Solomons Island. Proceeds from the event will benefit the CalvertHealth Cancer Center’s Sheldon E. Goldberg Center for Breast Care and its continued affiliation with Duke Health. Duke Health is a national leader in cancer care, opening doors to clinical trials and research for local patients close to home. The Breast Care Center was the first multidisciplinary breast center in Southern Maryland and gives local women and men access to an experienced team of breast health experts and the most sophisticated technology available today.

With higher mortality rates for breast cancer in Calvert County versus the state of Maryland and the United States, the 5K helps raise critical funds to support keeping breast care services close to home. Since the inception of the event in 2010, the 5K has raised more than $500,000 to support the critical work of the Sheldon E. Goldberg Center for Breast Care.

Foundation Board Vice Chair and 5K Committee Chair Barry Friedman said, “Last year, this 5K almost doubled what we previously raised, bringing in more than $102,000. Together, we have an opportunity to continue to make this 5K better than the previous year! Register to walk or run with your friends, family, co-workers, classmates or neighbors and show your support. We all know someone who has been touched by breast cancer and this is our opportunity to show our support for the Sheldon E. Goldberg Center for Breast Care.”

Race check-in begins at 7 a.m. and the program begins at 8 a.m. at the Solomons Medical Office Building located at 14090 Solomons Island Road. To take advantage of the $40 early bird rate and a guaranteed t-shirt, participants should register by September 27. Race registration will be available for $50 per registrant leading up to the event. All proceeds benefit the Sheldon E. Goldberg Center for Breast Care.
